DUBOIS, Pa. (WJAC) — It's safe to say that regular physical activities are paramount to kids building up healthy habits and interests. A gym in DuBois hosted another lifting fundraiser Saturday to bolster its free programs for kids.

Despite the heavy weights, this fundraiser was a light-hearted, friendly event — all to support kids' programs at the DuBois WPAL.

From the lean to bulky, gym buffs convened at the WPAL Fitness Center in downtown DuBois for the 2nd Annual Winter Warrior Showdown.

"The best part about these kind of competitions is, everyone roots for each other, and just a good camaraderie," Matt Shuey, one of the lifters, told 6 News. "It's always great to come out and see those familiar faces, and get excited for each other."

"I've done competitions like this for football, in the past," 18-year-old participant Logan Gotwald said. "And now that I can't play football anymore, since I'm a senior [in high school], I decided to do this more, which I thought was a lot of fun."

This powerlifting competition featured bench, squat, and deadlift events, with all proceeds going to the center's free youth programs.

"Kids lift [for] free here. I just think it's so great what they're doing to be able to let...kids get started. Just 'cause it's so beneficial for a lifelong of fitness and health," Shuey said.

WPAL DuBois says it's an outlet to provide local youth with a place to go and do something, rather than having downtime where they're more likely to use drugs or engage in illegal activities.

And while this was a competition, nobody goes home a loser.

"I feel tired. I mean, I feel great that I actually got personal records on all my lifts, so far," lifter Brian Duttry told 6 News, after some sets.

"The camaraderie, and the things going on here... It's just... I'm already a winner."

A great way to lift some spirits during January — and some funds.
