Photos capture moments Empire State Building hit by lightning

Amazing images taken by a photojournalist show the moments the Empire State Building was hit by lightning several times during a recent storm.

According to his X account, Gary Hershorn is a photojournalist in New York City and a Getty Images contributor. He shared several shots of the massive structure being hit by bolts of lightning Wednesday night.

The official X account for the Empire State Building also posted one of Hershorn's images, captioning the post with one word: OUCH.

People commented on the post, with one user sharing what he says is video of the lightning strike.

"Electrifying!" one person wrote.

Aside from social media accounts, the Empire State Building also has an official website, which notes the structure's antenna is hit by lightning an average of 25 times a year, "making for some incredible photo opportunities."

The website noted the building hosts more than 4 million visitors a year from across the globe.

It is also the most photographed building in the world.

The Empire State Building is one of the top five tallest buildings in New York City. Construction started in 1930 and completed within 13 months.
