On the run. The suspect accused of abducting a two-year-old girl in York County remains on the loose tonight. Despite the continuing search, police say the scenario went according to plan.

“The system worked exactly how it was supposed to,” said Springettsbury Township Police Chief Todd King.

A call to action. A community and law enforcement teaming together to find a missing two-year-old.

“It’s never anything you want to face, you really don’t, crimes involving children,” Chief King said.

But that was exactly the scenario for Springettsbury Township Police Chief Todd King yesterday afternoon. A woman pulls into the Royal Farms on Mount Zion Road around 3:30 p.m. and jumps out to grab some food. Seconds later, 27-year-old Maria McKenzie allegedly hopped in the running car and took off with two-year-old Mya Campbell in the back. Quickly, using surveillance camera video, officers identified the suspect, even getting a helping hand from her dad.

“He actually identified his daughter from the video surveillance and said yeah that was my daughter that took the car,” said Chief King.

An active child abduction brought a slew of resources. Township detectives worked with the York County Child Abduction Response Effort, or CARE team, and state troopers to get out the word. An informational poster with Campbell and McKenzie’s pictures, along with the missing car, was spread on social media less than two hours after the crime.

“It brought us a lot of information back quickly. Some good information. Some bad information. Everyone was trying to help with every little bit they saw,” said Chief King.

With information connecting Maria McKenzie to Philadelphia, Springettsbury Township notified police to the east. Around 7 p.m., the car and Mya Campbell were found in the 700 block of East Clearfield Street. The little girl was safe and sound. A community on edge was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief.

“This is something that you never want to face, a missing child. We were ecstatic, ecstatic with the outcome,” Chief King said.

After a quick checkup at the hospital, little Mya was reunited with her parents just after 9 p.m.

As for the search for Maria McKenzie, a Springettsbury Township detective is in Philadelphia aiding with the case. Investigators have filed five felony charges against the 27-year-old including kidnapping of a minor.
