WASHINGTON (TND) — Lawmakers spoke about immigration and border security as the Senate is expected to vote on another border security bill that is backed by the White House.
“Unfortunately, it's not moving forward because any Republican that wanted to support it, Donald Trump, came out and said, don't do it, I don’t want to give the current president a win,” Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., said. “So he's playing politics with it instead of focused on what the needs are from our law enforcement.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Monday that Senate Democrats would try again to pass a bipartisan package on border security this week despite GOP opposition.
“I think if you did bring it up for a vote, there's a possibility it could pass because some reasonable Republicans or some who aren't might say, yeah, we need to get this done,” Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., said.
Both Democrats and Republicans have tried to place fault on the other for not resolving the crisis at the border and failing to come up with a deal.
The second vote for a bipartisan border security bill is set for Thursday.
