Primary Was Rigged, Says Mount Vernon Mayor After Filing Lawsuit

May 2024 · 1 minute read

When the results were tallied following the primary on Tuesday, June 25, Thomas trailed Shawn Patterson-Howard unofficially by 204 votes, as she garnered 33 percent of the votes to Thomas’ 30 percent.

Some absentee ballots can still be counted, but it is unclear if they will be enough to save Thomas.

Thomas, who is facing mounting legal troubles for missing campaign funds and has recently come under fire by other candidates, has refused to concede, saying that his administration is monitoring the results.

A judge is reportedly currently reviewing Thomas’ case, while the Board of Elections says there is no merit to the lawsuit.

If she is ultimately elected, Patterson-Howard - the president and CEO of the Yonkers YMCA who formerly ran the Mount Vernon YMCA - would become the first female elected mayor of the city.

"Thank you, everyone, for your love, support and well wishes. Please be patient with me as a seek to acknowledge the TREMENDOUSLY OVERWHELMING outpouring of love and support from around the country and my internationally (Yes my Y family is checking in from across the GLOBE!!!)," Patterson-Howard posted on Facebook.
