DIMMITT, Texas (KVII) — One person is in critical condition and an unknown number of cows are dead after an explosion and fire at a dairy in northern Texas.

The Castro County Sheriff’s Office said it received eight 911 calls Monday night about an explosion and fire at the South Fork Dairy, a little over an hour south of Amarillo.

Multiple callers said some employees were trapped inside the dairy milking building.

Once the Castro County Sheriff’s Office arrived, it was determined that only one person was still in the dairy building.

Firefighters from Dimmitt and Hart located the victim and brought her out.

She was flown by medical helicopter to UMC Health System in Lubbock in critical condition.

Sheriff Sal Rivera said fire from the explosion spread through the dairy building into the dairy cow holding pens. An unknown number of dairy cows were killed.

The cause of the explosion and fire is under investigation by the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office.
