JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Over the past week 6 News has been following along with the six Bishop McCort wrestlers who competed in the U.S. Marine Corps Junior and 16-under National Championships.
Three Crimson Crushers earned all-American status and Mason Gibson, won a national championship in Fargo, North Dakota.
While those wrestlers competed across the country, their teammate was preparing to travel across the world to compete on the biggest mats of them all.
At the compound in Richland, two wrestlers from Bishop McCort have reached the peak of wrestling.
Last year, Bo Bassett won a freestyle world championship in Budapest, becoming the youngest world champion wrestler in history.
This year his teammate, Jax Forrest, will travel to Rome to represent team USA on the world championship mats.
Bassett and Forrest have been training together. As a former winner on the world’s mats, Bassett said he feels like it's his responsibility to get Forrest ready to go.
Bo assured said that Jax is sharp and will do just fine across the big pound.
Jax said that Bo and his coach, Bill Bassett, have explained to him the importance of not only being physically ready, but also being mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.
The rising 9th grader at Bishop McCort will leave Sunday for worlds in Rome, Italy, which will mark the second straight year that a Bishop McCort wrestler will represent Team USA.
Bo and Bill Bassett both agree that this area features some of the hardest working wrestlers on the planet, which includes Jax Forrest.
At a young age Jax set high goals for himself.
On Friday, July 29, those dreams will turn into a reality when he begins his quest for a world title at 55 kilograms, hoping to add world champion on the mats next to Bo.
